CTE’s “See the Vision” award winner is someone who appreciates the opportunities that she has at the CTE Academy. Kimberly Aguirre is a senior from Roosevelt High School and plans to attend Southeast Technical College next fall. Kim’s Culinary Teacher, Mrs. Whempner wrote, “Kim is a serious student and I appreciate the fact that Kim realizes that we are really lucky to have an opportunity such as the CTE Academy.” The CTE Academy recently opened a coffee shop and Kim demonstrated this conviction by being one of the first students to volunteer to work in the coffee shop. Mrs. Whempner added, “I think she would make an excellent chef!” Kim is undecided between culinary or digital media for a potential career field but we know she is a committed student and knows the value of a significant endeavor. Congratulations, Kim Aguirre!

The Aviation students are learning about gyroscopic behaviors by building their own bottle gyroscopes. The students will create and fly the plastic gyroscope and then observe the manner in which it flies. They will then apply what they know about aerodynamics, the four forces of flight, and gyroscopic principles to explain why the bottle maneuvers the way it did during the test flights.

A HUGE thank you goes to Jeremiah H., owner/operator of Chick-fil-A Empire Place for presenting about franchising and the restaurant business to our Culinary and Career Exploration classes. Jeremiah and staff also treated our students to some delicious treats. Thanks again for teaching our students about the opportunities in the hospitality industry!

Thank you to Abby McCann and Kyle Pickner of Plains Commerce Bank for taking the time to present to our Academy of Finance and Information Technology students about cryptocurrency!

Thank you to Weller Brothers for an awesome tour today for CTE Explorations students. Our students were given hands on experience with building a patio from pavers and an education on soil and plants! Not to mention they all got to pot their own succulents and bring them home! To top it off, Weller Brothers bought donuts and juice for the students!

Our "See the Vision" winner is kind, respectful and always willing to do what it takes to be successful in a demanding internship.

Native American Connections program renamed to Očéti Šakówiŋ Owáuŋspe (OSO)! The Native American Connections program, often referred to as ‘NAC’ is a program in the Sioux Falls School District that connects Native students with the culture, traditions, and heritage of the Oceti Sakowin. To center Indigenous language and culture in its programming, Native American Connections has collaboratively determined to rename its programs to Očéti Šakówiŋ Owáuŋspe or OSO. The program will continue to have OSO facilitators in all elementary buildings and offer OSO classes to Indigenous middle and high school students. In addition, OSO has renamed its Lakota language classes at the high school level which will now be titled Languages of the Oceti Sakowin. Our Languages of the Oceti Sakowin and Indigenous Studies courses are available to all high school students in the Sioux Falls School District. See more here: https://youtu.be/HdDc-JLLRCE

Project Search 2022! While it may not be a brand-new program, it is one that is having a huge impact on many Sioux Falls School District students! Project Search is an innovative, business led transition program for special education students ages 18-21 who have completed all high school requirements. The program is a partnership between the Sioux Falls School District, Dow Rummel Village, Department of Human Services, Transition Services Liaison Project, and Department of Labor and regulation. With the help of a classroom environment and Sioux Falls School District staff, students in the program learn and develop their employability skills. Students then apply those skills while participating in targeted internships at Dow Rummel, 5 days a week. The ultimate goal of Project Search is to find competitive employment for each intern upon completion of the program. The program’s strong partnerships are helping to develop the workforce of tomorrow, while gaining valuable interns and future employees along the way.
